Welcome to Protealinhas
In 1998 the company "Protea Iberica" was started in the south-west of Portugal. It concerns a totally new farm of Protea or Protea-related flowers with a production capacity of 25 hectares. Now after almost 10 years of growth the company is called Protealinhas and has a production capacity of 35 hectares.
Protea are southern hemisphere flowers originating from South-Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In these countries, they were picked in free nature for a long time, causing irregular supply and quality. Later, commercial farms increased the supply and made Protea flowers more popular. A big disadvantage was that Protea are winter-flowering plants, so in the above mentioned countries the main picking season is from March till September, which is the low season for flower demand in Europe (the main market for the selling of flowers). On the contrary, Protealinhas is situated in the northern hemisphere and has the picking season exactly in the good flower season. Of course, only a few European regions have the needed climate and even then an automatic drip irrigation with fertilization is absolutely necessary.
